Winder Power – KEMA certificate blog

Winder Power is proud to confirm the successful completion of independent short circuit type testing of a 13/20MVA 33/11kV Dyn11 Power Transformer by KEMA Labs, one of the world’s most respected high voltage testing authorities. The certification provides third party verification that oil immersed Power Transformer meets the short circuit performance requirements of internationally recognised standards, reinforcing the company’s commitment to high quality design, safety and long term reliability.

Testing was carried out by KEMA Labs at their facility in Arnhem, the Netherlands, in accordance with IEC 60076 1 and IEC 60076 5. Following completion of the test programme, KEMA confirmed that the transformer’s performance and measured values complied with the relevant standards and validated the ratings assigned by Winder Power. This independent validation demonstrates that the transformer can safely withstand the mechanical and thermal stresses that can occur during fault conditions on the network.

Short circuit testing is a critical stage in transformer validation, as it proves a unit’s ability to perform under some of the most demanding conditions it may experience in service. The programme included routine testing before and after the short circuit event, three phase short circuit tests, inspection of the active part following testing, and additional condition assessments such as dissolved gas analysis. Together, these tests confirm the structural integrity of the transformer and its ability to operate reliably under extreme electrical stress.

The tested transformer was designed and manufactured in our UK facility in compliance with UK DNO customer specification and assessed independently exactly as built. This ensures that the certification reflects real world manufacturing quality rather than theoretical design assumptions. The certificate applies specifically to the tested unit, providing assurance that the design, materials and construction methods have delivered a transformer capable of meeting international requirements.

Achieving KEMA short circuit type test certification represents a significant milestone and provides additional confidence for network operators, developers and project stakeholders. It demonstrates that Winder Power’s transformer designs can meet demanding grid and network applications while maintaining compliance with internationally recognised IEC standards.

This certification forms part of Winder Power’s ongoing investment in high voltage capability, detailed testing and continuous improvement. As power networks evolve and resilience becomes increasingly critical, independent verification of transformer performance remains an essential part of delivering reliable, long term infrastructure solutions for the UK and beyond. Later this year, Winder Power plans to submit a further unit for the same testing programme and looks forward to sharing an update in due course.
