Every day in Health & Safety is an opportunity to make a difference. There’s no such thing as a “typical” day for me, the variety is what makes this role so rewarding.
I usually start my day on the factory floor. Safety walks give me a real sense of what’s happening and help me spot risks before they become problems. From there, I review audits, update risk assessments, and make sure we’re fully compliant with legal requirements. If there’s been a near miss or an incident, I lead the investigation, not to assign any blame, but to understand what happened and prevent it from happening again.
Health & Safety touches each part of the business. I partner with Operations and Production to provide safe work procedures and training. With HR, I make sure onboarding includes the right safety knowledge. I advise our Engineering teams and Maintenance on equipment safety, LOLER checks, and permits to work. I even work with Procurement to ensure suppliers meet our standards. My role is to help each department achieve its objectives without compromising anyone’s wellbeing.
Rules only work when they become habits. That’s why I focus on the Bradley Curve, moving us towards a culture where people look out for each other. Our HSE awards celebrate those behaviours, showing that safety isn’t just mandatory, it’s valued.
Everyone completes iHASCO training modules, and we back that up with practical courses like manual handling, harness use, working at height, and crane operation. We believe knowledge is power, and in our world, it saves lives.
I never stop learning. Whether it’s new guidance from the HSE or best practice from industry, I make sure we’re always improving.
A question I get asked the most is about Noise levels, what’s safe, what’s legal, and what protection is needed. I love these questions because they show people are thinking about safety before it becomes an issue.
The best part of my job? Knowing all our team and visitors’ go home safe at the end of every day.
