Overview:

The Wise Street site, operated by our customer, plays a key role in the power distribution network, ensuring the supply of electricity across key areas.

This case study focuses on the installation of the second transformer (T2) at the site, following the successful installation of the first transformer (T1) back in June 2024. This installation was critical in enhancing the site’s capacity and reinforcing the reliability of the electricity supply to the surrounding area.

The transformer installed at Wise Street was a 20/40MVA, 33/11.5kV, Dyn11 power transformer. The installation of this second unit was part of our customers ongoing upgrade to meet the growing demand for energy and increase the system’s supply reliability.

Our Process:

The transformer was carefully delivered to the site by Colletts, a trusted haulier known for their experience with large scale transportation and handling of heavy equipment. The transportation process, including the coordination of traffic and precise timing, was critical to ensuring the transformer arrived safely without any delays.

Our site engineers, led by Tom Allan as the Lead Field Engineer, oversaw the unloading and positioning of the transformer. The team, including Karl Blackburn, Adam Davison, and Sam Baker (who had also been part of the T1 installation), followed a detailed step by step plan to ensure the transformer was positioned precisely for operation.

The team worked efficiently through the installation of all electrical connections, mechanical fittings, and safety checks. Given the complex nature of the installation, each member of the team played a crucial role in completing the task smoothly, maintaining a high level of safety throughout the process.

Coordination with Haulier: The successful transportation of a transformer of this size and weight requires careful planning. Colletts ensured that the heavy load was transported safely, with all required permits and equipment for the task. The engineers maintained close communication with the haulier to address any logistical issues that could arise during the process.
Site Preparation: The installation of such a large transformer requires careful site preparation to accommodate the equipment. Site engineers worked alongside our customer representatives to ensure that the foundation, power lines, and connections were in place for the installation of the new transformer.
Safety Protocols: As with all transformer installations, safety was a top priority. The engineers adhered to strict safety standards and protocols, ensuring that all work was done with the highest levels of precision. The team conducted regular safety briefings, and risk assessments were performed throughout the installation process.

Outcome

The installation of the transformer (T2) at the Wise Street site was completed on schedule. The successful commissioning of this transformer enhances the capacity of our customers’ distribution network, providing increased reliability and security of supply to the surrounding area. The combined efforts of the Colletts hauliers, the site engineers, and our customer’s staff ensured that this installation met all expectations.
