Wheatley Park

Overview:

In September 2025, Winder Power successfully installed the first of two transformers at the Wheatley Park site: a 12/24MVA, 66/11.5kV, Yyn0 unit. This project forms part of a phased upgrade to support increased demand and improve network resilience. The second transformer (T2) is scheduled for installation in 2026.

Our Process:

The Wheatley installation was delivered through a carefully phased approach over eight working days, with minimal disruption and high efficiency.

  • Day 1 – Site setup: The team arrived on site to set-up the skidding equipment and conduct safety briefings ahead of the delivery of the transformer tank. Delivery logistics were coordinated to ensure smooth arrival of the transformer and associated components once each stage of the installation was completed.
  • Day 2 – Transformer installation: The main transformer unit was installed using specialist skidding equipment. The unit was jacked down onto its final position on the plinth, ready for ancillary build-up.
  • Days 3 – 4 Ancillary build up: Ancillary components including the Turrets, Bushings, A-Frame, Radiators, Fans, Conservator Tank & Pipework were assembled and connected utilising a Mobile Crane.
  • Day 5 – Final installation works & oil top up: Our engineers applied the final touches to the transformer including fitting the smaller elements of pipework, running capillaries, wiring the fans, topping up the transformer up with the insulating oil removed for transport, and undertake a final inspection before the site acceptance testing took place.
  • Days 6 – 8 Site acceptance testing (SAT): A full suite of SAT procedures was undertaken including; swept path analysis, insulation resistance testing, winding resistance, ratio checks, vector group verification, CT Analysis and functional testing of protection systems. All results were documented and signed off by the commissioning team.

Outcome:

The Wheatley Park installation was delivered on time and to specification, with T1 now fully operational and supporting local distribution needs. The project demonstrates Winder Power’s continued commitment to efficient delivery and high quality engineering. With T2 scheduled for 2026, the site will soon benefit from enhanced capacity and long term reliability.
