Tuffley

Overview:

Winder Power supplied 2x 12/24MVA, 33/11.5kV, Dyn11 transformers to Tuffley, with installations taking place on 7th May (T2B) and 19th August (T1B). The project required a tailored approach to meet site-specific requirements, ensuring the transformers were delivered, installed, and commissioned to the highest standards. Each unit was installed using a Mobile Crane due to site restrictions. T1B was the more complex installation requiring a 500te crane. The differing installation methods added an additional layer of precision and planning to the project.

Our Process:

Winder Power played a key role in the project across five main areas: design, manufacturing, transport, installation and safety compliance.

  • Design & Manufacturing: The transformers were designed and built to high specifications, featuring on-tank radiators to optimise cooling and performance.
  • Site Assessment & Preparation: A pre-installation site visit was conducted to assess specific requirements and plan for the build-up process once the units arrived on site. Due to transport considerations, the conservator and affiliated pipework were removed for transit and reassembled on-site.
  • Specialist Installation: Unlike most projects that use the jack and skid method, this installation was carried out using a crane to carefully position the transformers, demonstrating our flexibility in adapting to site-specific needs.
  • Oil Handling & Safety Compliance: Once positioned, the transformers were topped up with oil following stringent health and safety protocols to ensure proper handling and compliance with industry & environmental regulations.
  • On-Site Installation: The installation process commenced with site setup on Day 1. On Day 2, the transformer was lifted into position via crane, followed by the build-up of the conservator. Days 3 and 4 were dedicated to finalising installation works, oil filling, and pre-commissioning to ensure the transformers were fully operational.

Outcome:

The successful installation and commissioning of the transformers at Tuffley reinforced Winder Power’s ability to deliver adaptable and high-quality solutions. The use of crane installation, a less common but efficient approach for such projects, ensured that the unit was positioned precisely and safely on-site. The removal of the conservator and affiliated pipework prior to transport was a strategic decision to facilitate smooth handling and efficient assembly once the transformer arrived. Our careful management of oil handling and HSE protocols during the filling process ensured that all procedures were followed to the highest safety standards, minimising any potential risk. With the transformers now operational, the site benefits from reliable energy distribution, thanks to the high specification 33/11.5kV Dyn11 units. This project demonstrates Winder Power’s ability to adapt to specific site requirements while maintaining superior installation quality and efficient timelines.
