1x 20/40MVA, 66/11.5kV, Yyn0 transformer

Hereford

Overview:

In 2024, Winder Power manufactured and supplied 1x 20/40MVA, 66/11.5kV, Yyn0 transformer to Hereford substation. The project, spanning 11 days of on-site work, required a tailored approach to address logistical and technical considerations. The transformer was manufactured, delivered, installed, and commissioned efficiently, ensuring the site’s energy infrastructure met high operational standards.

Our Process:

Winder Power played a key role in the project across four main areas: design, manufacturing, transport and installation.

  • Design & Manufacturing: Our team designed and manufactured the transformer to meet the high-specification requirements of the 66kV system, ensuring optimal performance and reliability.
  • Installation Considerations: A pre-installation site visit identified the need to remove lid-mounted turrets and HV bushings to comply with transport height requirements, allowing for a seamless delivery process.
  • Transport Coordination: The project involved careful transport planning, ensuring the unit arrived at the site in the most efficient manner. To facilitate smooth handling, the transformer was prepared for transit with necessary adjustments, and on this occasion, the oil was filled on-site due to transportation requirements.
  • On-Site Installation: The haulier, Colletts, undertook site preparation on Day 1, followed by positioning of the transformer on Day 2. Over the next three days, the cooler bank, turrets, and bushings were assembled. Oil filling was carried out on Days 6 and 7, and the final phase, from Days 8 to 11, involved thorough pre-commissioning checks to ensure the unit was fully operational.

Outcome:

The transformer was successfully installed and commissioned, enhancing the site’s power distribution capability. Their integration into the network ensures efficient energy transfer and supports the area’s growing energy demands. The thorough pre-commissioning process confirmed the transformers’ full functionality, providing long-term reliability and stability. This project highlights Winder Power’s ability to deliver high-quality, tailored solutions that meet site-specific requirements while maintaining operational efficiency. The successful execution of this project has further strengthened Winder Power’s expertise in managing complex installations, reinforcing our reputation as a trusted partner in the power industry. We are currently manufacturing and installing a second transformer for Hereford in May 2025 which aims to follow the same plan as the first.
