Our Process:

This extensive on-site refurbishment was conducted under strict CDM regulations, with all personnel undergoing site-specific inductions, safety briefings, and compliance with RAMS and QAD protocols. The site was carefully managed from initial setup to completion to ensure safety, quality, and minimal disruption to surrounding infrastructure.

  • Site Establishment & Compliance: All site personnel received full inductions and toolbox talks in line with CDM regulations. A site office was established to manage safety documentation, including RAMS, lift plans, inductions, and checklists. Permit-to-Work protocols were issued and monitored in coordination with sites Senior Authorised Person.
  • Initial Disassembly & Access Preparation: Scaffold and crash deck were erected to access the transformer safely. Primary and secondary busbars were removed to enable diagnostic testing. The cooler bank and associated components were delivered and pre-assembled, ensuring all gaskets, seals, and torques met specification.
  • Transformer Testing & Oil Handling: Routine testing was carried out, including insulation resistance, SFRA, Tan Delta, and winding resistance checks. Transformer oil was safely drained using an EOS tanker, access covers refurbished, and the tank partially refilled to protect internal components during ongoing works.
  • Mechanical Refurbishment & Lifting Operations: Redundant cooler systems, lid, bushings, and turrets were removed using a mobile crane. A new lid gasket was cut and installed, and the transformer lid securely re-seated. New radiators, pipework, conservator and control enclosure were installed and sealed.
  • Auxiliary Works & Surface Preparation: The auxiliary transformer was drained and re-gasketed. All necessary refurbishment, including PRD and breather replacement, was completed. Both transformers were then steam cleaned ahead of painting.
  • Wiring, Testing & Final Assembly: Electrical components such as fans, pumps, and overloads were wired and connected to the new control kiosk. Final transformer tests were completed, including verification of control systems and protective devices. Busbars were reconnected post-testing.
  • Painting, QA & Demobilisation: Corroded areas were treated, primed, and painted under controlled conditions. Final inspections, oil sampling, and QA sign-off were conducted. Site scaffolding and equipment were removed, leaving the area clean and ready for re-energisation.

Outcome:

The successful completion of the GT1 Transformer refurbishment, including the cooler bank replacement and associated works, was delivered on schedule and to the highest quality standards. All testing returned results within specification, confirming the integrity and performance of the refurbished unit. The site was left clean, secure, and fully prepared for re-energisation, with all documentation signed off and approved by the client’s engineering team. Through close coordination, strict adherence to safety procedures, and our skilled team, We ensured minimal disruption to our customers operations and delivered a future-proofed asset ready for continued service.
